Sedation Dentistry

Relax. We’ve Got You Covered.

Dental care shouldn’t feel overwhelming. For patients who experience dental anxiety, sensitivity, or are undergoing longer or more involved procedures, sedation dentistry can make treatment feel calmer and more comfortable.

At Oakville Dental House, we offer IV sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax during your appointment.

With IV sedation, medication is delivered through a vein to create a deeply relaxed, drowsy state. You remain conscious and able to respond to your dental team, but may feel very relaxed and have little awareness of the procedure. Many patients remember very little of their appointment afterward. Because IV sedation can affect alertness and coordination, you’ll need someone to accompany you home and should plan to rest for the remainder of the day.

Nitrous oxide provides a lighter level of relaxation through a small mask and wears off quickly once the gas is stopped.

Our team will review your health history, treatment needs, and comfort level to determine which option is appropriate for you.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild form of sedation that helps you feel calm and relaxed during your dental appointment. It is administered through a small mask placed over your nose, allowing you to breathe in a carefully controlled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen.

The effects begin quickly and wear off shortly after the gas is stopped. Most patients can resume their normal activities soon after their appointment, subject to their dentist’s instructions. Nitrous oxide is a convenient option for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety.
IV Sedation
Intravenous (IV) sedation is administered through a small needle placed into a vein, allowing sedative medication to take effect relatively quickly. It produces a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide, and patients often remember little about the procedure.

IV sedation may be suitable for patients with significant dental anxiety or those undergoing longer or more complex procedures. Your dentist will assess your medical history, treatment needs, and suitability before recommending this option. Monitoring is required throughout the procedure, and you will need someone to accompany you home afterward.
